History

In August 1978 Ed Nix joined ServiceMaster Corporation as a Housekeeping Manager in the Healthcare Services Division.  He managed 13 employees in the housekeeping and laundry department of the Northwest Home for the Aged in Chicago, Illinois.  He met Nicki, a Certified Nurse Aide while there, and made her his wife 4 years later.

From 1978 to 1989, Ed received several promotions and new assignment with ServiceMaster, becoming Senior Operations Manager – Europe.  He moved to England with his wife and son, Josh, to manage housekeeping and patient transportation services for three hospitals totaling two and a half million square feet with about 450 employees.

In December of 1989, Ed and Nicki returned to Chicago with a new dream.  They wanted to own a business.  They learned of a small franchise available in Lincoln, Nebraska, and decided to check it out.  They were impressed with the city, and by April 1st, 1990 had signed papers on the business and their new home.  They had about 18 employees and the same amount of accounts.  For the next 2 years they operated the business from their home.  Two sets of laundry equipment were needed, one for the family wash and the other for mop heads and towels.  At night they both did some cleaning and training.  The business was growing.

From 1992 until 1995 ServiceMaster Professional Building Maintenance was housed in a rented space, at 26th & Randolph, which was too small after 3 years.  By then, they employed more than 100 people and served more than 70 customers.

In July 1995, the business was moved to 2626 ‘O’ Street, and Ed and Nicki purchased the building in January 1996.  They grew to about 175 employees and 102 accounts.  Ed hired Jon Paolini to be the Human Resources Manager in January 1994 and in 1996 became his General Manager.  Ed left the day-to-day details to Jon and spent his time networking in various community organizations.  Ed also had time to develop structured leadership classes where his management staff studied various greats like John Maxwell, Dale Carnegie and Steven Covey.

On July 31st, 2009 Ed & Nicki Nix sold the business to his General Manager, Jon & wife, Angela Paolini.  They have both been around the company for well over a decade and will continue to follow the ServiceMaster Professional Building Maintenance mission statement by providing extraordinary service.
